Best Tablet for Kids in 2026: By Age, Budget and Parental Controls
Amazon replaced its Fire Kids tablets in October 2026, so most “best kids tablet” lists are now out of date. Here’s what to buy by age, what the parental controls actually do, and what you’ll pay after the free year.

The short answer
- Ages 3 to 5: Amazon Kids Tablet 8, ages 3–5 (launched at $229.99, Oct 2026). Soft bumper case, a year of Amazon Kids+ and parental controls on by default.
- Ages 6 to 12: Amazon Kids Tablet 11, ages 6–12 (launched at $329.99). Sharper 2.5K screen, 8GB of RAM and a slim case with a kickstand.
- Android that grows with them: Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ Kids Edition (launched at $349.99, Apr 2026). 128GB, microSD and a kids pen in the box.
- Apple families and older kids: the iPad (A16), with Screen Time. Budget extra for a case.
What matters in a kids tablet
1. The right version for their age
Amazon now sells each Kids Tablet in two versions: ages 3 to 5 with a chunky soft bumper, and ages 6 to 12 with a slimmer hard case and kickstand. Younger kids need the drop protection and a handle; older kids want something that doesn’t look like a toddler toy.
2. A case in the box
The Amazon and Samsung kids bundles include a protective case; an iPad doesn’t. None of these makers publishes a drop rating, so treat “kid-proof” as marketing and keep the case on.
3. Parental controls you’ll actually use
Look for daily time limits, a bedtime cut-off, approval for new apps and purchases, and web filtering. All four options here cover those, but they work differently (see parental controls compared).
4. What it costs after the first year
Amazon’s Kids Tablets include one year of Amazon Kids+. After that it renews at $7.99 a month with Prime (or $8.99 without) unless you cancel. Factor that in when comparing prices.
5. Storage for downloads
Kids watch a lot of downloaded video in the car and on planes. The Amazon Kids Tablets have 64GB; Samsung’s Kids Edition has 128GB plus a microSD slot (up to 2TB); the iPad starts at 128GB with no way to add more.

Amazon’s “learn first” goals are the stand-out: you can require a set amount of reading before video unlocks. Apple’s Screen Time is the most flexible for older kids, with limits by app category and an approved-websites-only mode.
The real cost after year one
The Amazon Kids Tablets include 12 months of Amazon Kids+ (ad-free books, videos, games and apps for ages 3 to 12). After that, as of October 2026:
- With Prime: $7.99 a month or $69.99 a year.
- Without Prime: $8.99 a month or $79.99 a year.
So over two years, a Kids Tablet 8 costs about $300 with Prime on the annual plan ($229.99 launch price plus $69.99). Set a reminder before it renews if you don’t plan to keep it. Samsung and Apple don’t bundle a kids subscription, so there’s nothing to cancel, but also no included library.
How much screen time?
In February 2026 the American Academy of Pediatrics replaced its older media guidance with a new policy statement. Instead of one fixed limit by age, it asks families to set limits that fit their child, suggesting a range from under an hour a day for toddlers and preschoolers to 1 to 2 hours or more of entertainment media (not schoolwork) for school-age kids. It also recommends:
- No screens in the hour before bedtime, and no devices in bedrooms.
- Screen-free mealtimes and homework time.
- A written Family Media Plan, which you can build on HealthyChildren.org.
A kids tablet’s bedtime and daily-limit settings make these easy to enforce without nightly arguments.
What about the old Fire Kids tablets?
Amazon is moving away from Fire tablets, but some Fire Kids models are still listed on Amazon. They can be a bargain for very young kids, and launch coverage reports existing Fire devices will keep getting security updates. The new Kids Tablets are the better buy for most families: they run full Android with parent-approved Google Play apps, and the 11-inch model’s screen is in a different league. Our Fire tablet replacement guide covers the switch in detail.
The verdict
For most families, Amazon’s new Kids Tablets are the easiest choice: case, content and controls in one box. Get the Kids Tablet 8 (ages 3–5) for preschoolers and the Kids Tablet 11 (ages 6–12) for school-age kids. Choose the Galaxy Tab A11+ Kids Edition if you want more storage, a pen and no subscription, or an iPad if your family lives on Apple devices and you want it to last into the teen years. Whatever you buy, budget for Kids+ after the first year, or set a reminder to cancel.
