Price and configurations

The 12 Pro launched at $499.99 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in Graphite. The Nanomatte version, with the same memory and storage, launched at $549.99. Amazon’s developer specs also list 16GB RAM and 256GB storage options. The announcement gives only starting prices, so check the listing for what the higher configurations cost.

The Pro Keyboard ($149.99) and Pro Pen ($89.99) are sold separately. A full Nanomatte, keyboard and pen setup comes to about $790 at launch prices before tax. That’s still less than many laptops, but it’s a long way from what Fire tablets used to cost.

Release date

Amazon announced the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro on October 8, 2026, and opened orders the same day at Amazon, Best Buy and Target. Amazon says US, Canada and Mexico orders ship on October 14, 2026, and orders in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain ship on October 19. If you’ve seen October 19 quoted, that’s the UK and EU ship date.

Display and design

The screen is the main reason to buy this tablet. It uses a 3:2 aspect ratio, the same shape as a printed page and most laptops built for work, rather than the long 16:10 shape of the Alexa Tablet 11 and most Android tablets. That means less letterboxing for documents, comics and web pages. The trade-off is bigger black bars on widescreen video. At 2800 × 1840 and 280 PPI, it’s the sharpest screen Amazon has put in a tablet. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and pen strokes look smoother than on the 90Hz Tablet 11 or 60Hz Tablet 8.

Brightness is rated at 500 nits. That’s fine indoors but not exceptional in sunlight, which is where Nanomatte comes in. The body is a 6.5 mm aluminum unibody, and The Verge measured about 550 g. That’s light for a 12-inch tablet but still a two-handed device for long reading sessions.

Nanomatte vs standard display

Nanomatte is an anti-glare surface Amazon developed with Corning. Hands-on coverage compares it to Apple’s nano-texture glass. The idea is the same: a finely textured surface scatters reflections, so lamps and windows don’t show up as sharp mirror images on the screen.

What early hands-on reports say: The Verge found that the Nanomatte panel almost completely eliminated glare and stayed readable at nearly any angle, struggling only at extreme angles in the brightest light. The glossy standard screen, by comparison, acted much like a mirror in bright sunlight and washed out when viewed off-angle.

The trade-off to watch: matte and textured screens generally scatter a little of the screen’s own light as well as reflections, which can make text look a touch softer and blacks a little lighter. Nobody has measured this on the 12 Pro yet, so we’ll update this section when full reviews land. Textured glass also tends to need more careful cleaning. Follow Amazon’s care instructions rather than using any cloth or spray.

Our take: if you bought a tablet to read, whether Kindle books, PDFs or comics, the $50 for Nanomatte is the upgrade most likely to change how the tablet feels to use. If it’s mainly a Netflix screen for the couch, save the $50.

Performance and battery

The MediaTek Dimensity 8400 is a 4nm, 8-core chip, and a big step up from the budget MediaTek chips in Fire tablets. Engadget calls the 12 Pro Amazon’s best tablet ever. The 8GB base model should be plenty for streaming, reading and everyday multitasking. The 16GB version makes more sense if you plan to keep it for many years or run several apps side by side.

Amazon rates the 9,000 mAh battery at up to 16 hours of video and up to 20 hours of reading in Kindle mode, with 27W charging over USB-C. Those are Amazon’s figures. Independent battery tests weren’t available when we published.

Software: Android, Alexa+ and Kindle mode

This is Amazon’s first tablet with full Android and the Google Play Store, not Fire OS. That means Google apps, Microsoft Office, your banking app and most Android games install normally. It launches on Android 16, and Amazon has promised Android 17 for early 2027.

Alexa+ is built in. A Dynamic Tab in the top-left corner shows timely information, and an expandable “For You” panel collects suggestions. Kindle mode turns the tablet into a dedicated reader: notifications are silenced, blue light is reduced and battery life is extended.

Keyboard and pen

The 12 Pro has pogo pins for the Pro Keyboard (opens Amazon in a new tab) ($149.99), a physical connection that typically means no Bluetooth pairing or separate charging. The Pro Pen (opens Amazon in a new tab) ($89.99) has 4,096 pressure levels and charges wirelessly. Neither accessory is included, and Amazon’s announcement lists them only for the 12 Pro, not the Tablet 11 or 8.

Who should buy the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro

  • Buy it if you read a lot on a tablet, want a keyboard-and-pen setup for school or light work, or want a big Android tablet with a fast chip for well under iPad Pro money.
  • Buy it if you already live in Amazon’s world (Kindle, Audible, Prime Video, Alexa) and want one device that ties it together.
  • Skip it if you mostly stream video in bed. The Alexa Tablet 11 costs $170 less and its 16:10 screen suits video better.
  • Skip it if you need a guaranteed long software-support window. Amazon hasn’t published one, while Apple and Samsung have long track records. See 12 Pro vs iPad Air.

What we don’t know yet

  • Update policy: we couldn’t find a stated number of years of Android or security updates in Amazon’s announcement. Android 17 in early 2027 is the only firm promise so far.
  • Real battery life: the 16-hour video and 20-hour reading figures are Amazon’s.
  • Nanomatte sharpness: no lab measurements of contrast or clarity yet.
  • Alexa+ in daily use: early hands-ons covered setup, not weeks of everyday use.

The verdict

On paper, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the first Amazon tablet that competes with premium tablets rather than undercutting them. The 3:2 120Hz screen, Google Play and the Nanomatte option make it especially compelling for readers. If that’s you, the Nanomatte model is the one to get. If you just want a good streaming tablet, the cheaper Alexa Tablet 11 makes more sense.
