Alexa Tablet 12 Pro vs iPad Air: Is It the Best iPad Alternative?

Amazon priced its first Pro tablet $100 below the 11-inch iPad Air and gave it a bigger, faster-refreshing screen. Here’s where that’s a real win, where the iPad still leads, and which other iPad alternatives are worth a look.

The short answer

  • Get the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro (launched at $499.99) if you want the best iPad alternative for reading, video and everyday use. It has a bigger 12-inch 120Hz screen, an optional anti-glare finish and Google Play, for $100 less.
  • Get the iPad Air (11-inch launched at $599) if you already use an iPhone or Mac, want the much more powerful M4 chip, or care most about long software support and pro-level apps.
  • Want a pen in the box? Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 FE includes an S Pen.

Specs side by side

Alexa Tablet 12 Pro specs come from Amazon’s announcement and developer documentation. iPad Air (M4) specs come from Apple’s official spec page, and launch prices from TechCrunch’s March 2026 coverage. We include the 13-inch iPad Air because it’s the closer match in screen size.

Screen: the 12 Pro’s biggest advantage

For $100 less than the 11-inch iPad Air, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro gives you a larger screen (11.95 vs 10.86 inches), slightly higher pixel density (280 vs 264 PPI) and a 120Hz refresh rate. Reviewers have consistently noted that the iPad Air M4 is still limited to 60Hz, a feature Apple reserves for the iPad Pro. Scrolling, pen strokes and games feel smoother at 120Hz.

Then there’s glare. Apple lists an antireflective coating on the iPad Air but no nano-texture glass option. Amazon’s Nanomatte 12 Pro ($549.99) adds a textured anti-glare finish that The Verge found nearly eliminated reflections in bright light. If you read outdoors or near windows, nothing in the iPad Air lineup matches that at this price. More in our Nanomatte vs standard breakdown.

Where the iPad holds up: the 13-inch Air goes brighter (600 nits), and both iPad Airs use fully laminated panels with wide P3 color, according to Apple’s specs. Amazon hasn’t published lamination or color-gamut details for the 12 Pro.

Performance: the iPad Air’s biggest advantage

The M4 in the iPad Air is a laptop-class chip from the same family Apple uses in its Macs, and it comes with 12GB of memory. The 12 Pro’s MediaTek Dimensity 8400 is a capable 4nm, 8-core chip and a huge step up from any Fire tablet, but it’s a mid-to-upper-range mobile chip. Head-to-head benchmarks haven’t been published yet. Based on the class of chip alone, expect the iPad Air to be clearly faster for video editing, pro drawing apps and demanding games.

For streaming, reading, browsing, email and split-screen multitasking, either will feel fast. The 12 Pro offers a 16GB RAM option, which helps it keep more apps open, but the iPad Air’s software is generally better optimized for tablet-sized apps.

Battery and build

Amazon rates the 12 Pro at up to 16 hours of video, and up to 20 hours of reading in Kindle mode, from a 9,000 mAh battery. Apple rates both iPad Airs at up to 10 hours of web browsing or video. These are each company’s own tests and aren’t directly comparable, but the gap is large enough to suggest the 12 Pro will last longer between charges. Independent tests will settle it.

Both are thin aluminum tablets. The 11-inch iPad Air is lighter (464 g vs about 550 g) because it’s smaller. Against the 13-inch iPad Air (616 g), the 12 Pro is the lighter tablet.

Software and ecosystem

This is often the real deciding factor:

  • Choose the iPad Air if you have an iPhone or Mac. AirDrop, iMessage, Handoff and shared iCloud apps make the iPad part of a system. iPadOS also has the deepest library of tablet-optimized apps, especially for drawing, music and video editing.
  • Choose the 12 Pro if you use an Android phone or live in Google’s apps, or if you use Kindle, Audible, Prime Video and Alexa every day. The 12 Pro runs full Android 16 with Google Play, and adds Alexa+ and a Kindle mode that the iPad can’t match.

Software support: Amazon has promised Android 17 for early 2027 but, as far as we could find, hasn’t stated how many years of updates the 12 Pro will get. Apple doesn’t publish a fixed number either, but iPads have historically received iPadOS updates for many years. If you keep tablets a long time, that track record favors the iPad.

Price with accessories

At launch prices, the 12 Pro (standard) with the Pro Keyboard and Pro Pen comes to $739.97, or $789.97 with Nanomatte. Apple sells its keyboard and Apple Pencil models for the iPad Air separately. We couldn’t verify current accessory prices, so check Apple’s store before you compare totals. Remember that the 11-inch iPad Air itself starts $100 higher than the 12 Pro, before any accessories.

The best iPad alternatives

If you’re searching for an iPad alternative, these are the tablets we’d look at first, depending on budget:

  1. Alexa Tablet 12 Pro (launched at $499.99). The closest thing to an iPad Air in Android form, with a bigger, faster screen. Our top pick above.
  2. Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE (opens Amazon in a new tab) (launched at $499 in the US, April 2025). A 10.9-inch 90Hz LCD, Exynos 1580 chip, IP68 dust and water resistance, and an S Pen included in the box. Its age shows next to the 12 Pro, but if you want a pen without paying extra, or rated dust and water resistance, it’s worth comparing.
  3. Alexa Tablet 11 (launched at $329.99). If you mainly want an iPad-sized screen for video and browsing, the 11 offers a sharp 2560 × 1600 90Hz display at about half the iPad Air’s price.
  4. Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ (opens Amazon in a new tab) (launched at $249.99 in the US, Jan 2026). The budget alternative: an 11-inch 90Hz screen, microSD up to 2TB and a promise of seven Android OS upgrades, per SamMobile.

The verdict

The Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the most convincing iPad alternative Amazon has made, and on screen size, refresh rate, glare and price it beats the 11-inch iPad Air on paper. The iPad Air still wins on raw power, polish and long-term support. If you’re not tied to Apple, the 12 Pro is the better value for most people. If you are, the iPad Air is still the safer buy.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro better than the iPad Air?

It depends on what you value. The 12 Pro has a bigger 120Hz screen, an optional anti-glare Nanomatte finish and a lower launch price ($499.99 vs $599). The iPad Air has the faster M4 chip, 12GB of memory, the Apple ecosystem and a longer software-support track record.

What is the best iPad alternative in 2026?

For most people who don’t need Apple’s ecosystem, the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. It launched at $499.99 with a 12-inch 120Hz screen and Google Play. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S10 FE is the pick if you want a pen included, and the Galaxy Tab A11+ is the budget option.

Does the iPad Air have a 120Hz screen?

No. The iPad Air with M4 has a 60Hz display. Apple keeps its 120Hz ProMotion screens for the iPad Pro.

Is the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro as fast as an iPad Air?

Not likely. Its MediaTek Dimensity 8400 is a strong mobile chip, but Apple’s M4 is a laptop-class chip. For streaming, reading and browsing, both will feel fast. For heavy creative apps and games, the iPad Air has more headroom.

For writing, research, Google Docs and note-taking, yes. Add the Pro Keyboard ($149.99) and Pro Pen ($89.99). If your school requires specific iPad apps, check that Android versions exist first.
