The short answer

  • Best under $300: Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ ($299.99 at Samsung, Oct 2026). 11-inch 90Hz screen, microSD, no ads, and the longest reported update support in this price range.
  • Best under $200: Lenovo Idea Tab (about $190–$200 at Lenovo). The sharpest screen here, often bundled with a pen; shorter update support.
  • Best Amazon tablet under $300: Alexa Tablet 8 ($229.99 at launch), if you want Alexa+, Kindle mode and Prime Video front and center.
  • Worth stretching to $330: the Alexa Tablet 11 ($329.99 at launch), with a much better screen and twice the RAM of the Tablet 8.

What matters in a budget tablet

1. Years of updates

This is where cheap tablets differ most, and it’s rarely on the box. A tablet that stops getting Android and security updates gets less safe and slowly loses app support. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A11+ is reported to get up to seven major Android updates; Lenovo’s Idea Tab, about two. Amazon hasn’t published an update policy for its new Alexa Tablets.

2. A sharp enough screen

Tech Advisor recommends an IPS screen of at least 220 pixels per inch for comfortable reading. Here, the Lenovo Idea Tab (about 274 PPI) and Alexa Tablet 11 (276 PPI) clear that easily; the Galaxy Tab A11+ (about 206 PPI) and Alexa Tablet 8 (180 PPI) fall short, which shows in small text more than in video.

3. Storage you can expand

Budget tablets fill up fast with downloaded shows and games. The Galaxy Tab A11+, Lenovo Idea Tab and Fire HD 8 take microSD cards; the Alexa Tablets don’t, so pick their storage size carefully.

4. Ads and app stores

Amazon’s tablets show sponsored lock-screen ads unless you pay $20 more at purchase. The new Alexa Tablets run the full Google Play Store; the old Fire tablets don’t.

Not sold in the US

Some tablets that top “best budget tablet” lists, often written for UK readers, aren’t available in the US. As of October 2026, Samsung’s US store sells the 11-inch Galaxy Tab A11+ but not the 8.7-inch Galaxy Tab A11, and Xiaomi’s Redmi Pad 2 and the OnePlus Pad Lite aren’t sold here. Imported models can have the wrong LTE bands, no US warranty and no local support. There’s also no new iPad under $300: Apple’s cheapest, the iPad (A16), starts at $449 as of October 2026.

The verdict

For most people, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ is the budget tablet to buy: a big screen, microSD, no ads and the longest reported update support at $299.99. Under $200, the Lenovo Idea Tab has the best screen, but expect only a couple of years of major updates. Choose the Alexa Tablet 8 if you live in Amazon’s world, or spend $30 more on the Alexa Tablet 11 for a far better screen. Skip discontinued Fire tablets unless they’re very cheap and the job is simple.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tablet under $300?

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A11+ ($299.99 at Samsung, October 2026). It has an 11-inch 90Hz screen, 128GB of storage with a microSD slot, no ads, and is reported to get up to seven major Android updates, far longer than most budget tablets.

What is the best tablet under $200?

The Lenovo Idea Tab, listed at about $190 to $200 by Lenovo in October 2026. It has a sharp 11-inch 2.5K screen and a microSD slot, and is often bundled with a pen and case. The catch is a short update window of about two major Android upgrades.

Is there an iPad under $300?

Not new. Apple raised the base iPad (A16) to $449 for 128GB in June 2026, so there is no new iPad under $300 as of October 2026.

Is the Alexa Tablet 8 worth it?

It’s the cheapest way to get Amazon’s new Android tablet with Google Play, Alexa+ and Kindle mode ($229.99 at launch). But its 8.7-inch screen is lower resolution (180 PPI), the base model has 4GB of RAM and 64GB with no microSD slot, and it shows lock-screen ads unless you pay $20 more. For most adults, the Galaxy Tab A11+ or Alexa Tablet 11 is better value.

Should I buy a Fire tablet on clearance?

Only at a very low price and for simple jobs like video or kids’ apps. Amazon has ended Fire tablet production; launch coverage reports existing models will get support for four years after the final shipment. Fire tablets don’t have the Google Play Store, and the Fire HD 8 has just 3GB of RAM.

How many years of updates do budget tablets get?

It varies widely. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab A11+ is reported to get up to seven major Android updates, while Lenovo’s Idea Tab is listed for about two.
